How to sign a PDF without printing it

Last updated: 1 November 2026

You can sign a PDF without printing it by creating your signature on screen with Sign PDF, placing it on the page and downloading the signed file, with no printer or scanner needed. You can draw your signature with a mouse, finger or pen, type your name in a handwriting style, or upload a photo of your signature.

This guide is for anyone who has to return a rental agreement, an offer letter, a school form or a delivery note and doesn't want to print, sign and scan it. The PDF is signed by your own browser and nothing is uploaded. There is no account or sign-up, and it's free.

Open Sign PDF

Step by step

  1. Select your PDF. Open Sign PDF and click “Select PDF file” or drop the document onto the page. Its first page is shown.
  2. Create your signature. Draw it in the box, or type your name and pick a style. You can also upload a picture of your signature.
  3. Clean up a photo signature. If you upload a photo, turn on “Remove white background”. The paper becomes transparent, so only the ink is placed on the page.
  4. Place the signature. Click “Add to page”, then drag the signature to the signature line. Resize it with the round handle until it fits.
  5. Add the date, initials and marks. Under “Add more to the page”, add initials, a date, free text such as your name or city, and check marks or crosses. Place and resize each item the same way.
  6. Sign other pages. Use the arrows above the page to move to other pages and place your signature or initials there too.
  7. Sign and download. Click “Sign PDF”, then “Download”. To discourage further changes, continue with Protect PDF.

Get a clean signature from a photo

If you want your real handwritten signature rather than one drawn with a mouse, a photo works well when you prepare it properly.

  1. Sign on plain white paper.
  2. Take a sharp photo in good light.
  3. Upload it in Sign PDF with “Remove white background” turned on.
  4. Check the result on the page and resize it with the round handle.

On a phone you can skip the photo and draw your signature with your finger, then drag it into place. The tool works in modern browsers on Android and iPhone.

Fill in forms and multi-page agreements

Most forms, offers and agreements only need a visible signature plus a few extras. You create your signature once and can place it as many times as you need, for example on every page that has to be initialled.

  • Date: today’s date is filled in for you; pick the format the document asks for.
  • Initials: add them to each page that needs them, using the arrows above the page to switch pages.
  • Text: add your name, city or any other short entry.
  • Check marks and crosses: tick the boxes on a form.

Dates and text are written as real text, and marks as sharp vector lines. You can move or resize each item before you save.

When to use something else

Sign PDF adds an electronic signature, which is an image of your signature, not a certificate-based digital signature. In many countries a simple electronic signature like this is accepted for everyday documents, but the rules depend on your country and the type of document.

If a contract requires a qualified or digital signature, use a certified signing service instead. When in doubt, ask the person or organisation that sent you the document which kind of signature they accept.

After signing: lock the file

If you want to discourage further changes, open the signed file in Protect PDF. You set a password and can restrict printing, copying, editing, comments, forms or page changes with a separate permissions password. The file is encrypted on your device.

Keep in mind that most PDF readers respect restrictions but some ignore them; the open password is the real protection. Share the password through a different channel than the file, for example by phone.
