Page numbers make long documents easier to read, print, discuss and refer to – reports, theses, contracts, manuals and merged PDFs all benefit from them. With PDF4U you choose where the numbers go, how they look and which pages get one.

Numbers can start at any value, skip the cover page or the last page, or cover just a range of pages. Use formats such as “1”, “1 / 9” or “Page 1 of 9”, or write your own text such as “Report – page {n} of {total}”. Pick the font, colour and opacity, and mirror the numbers on facing pages for printed books. They are placed the right way up on landscape and rotated pages too. Everything runs in your browser, so your document stays private.

Typical uses: number a thesis or project report before printing, add page references to a contract so everyone can point to “page 7”, or number a PDF you just put together from several files. The numbers are written as real text in a standard PDF font, so they print sharply and barely change the file size.

How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Select your PDF

Click “Select PDF file” or drop a PDF onto the page. Combine several files first with Merge PDF if needed.

  2. Choose position and format

Pick one of the nine positions, the number format or your own text, the font, size, colour and opacity, and the distance from the edge. Tick “Facing pages” for documents printed as a book.

  3. Choose the pages

Number all pages, all except the first or last, or only a range such as 3-12. Set the first number if it shouldn’t be 1.

  4. Add numbers and download

Click “Add page numbers”, then “Download” to save the numbered PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to add page numbers with PDF4U?

Yes. Your PDF is edited by your own browser and is never uploaded to a server.

Can I start numbering at a number other than 1?

Yes. Enter any first number, for example 5 if your document continues another one.

How do I leave the cover page without a number?

Choose “All except the first page”. The second page then gets the first number. To start at 2 instead, set the first number to 2.

Do page numbers work on landscape and rotated pages?

Yes. Numbers are placed according to how each page is shown, so they appear the right way up at the position you chose.

Can I add page numbers to a password-protected PDF?

Yes. Enter the password when asked. The numbered PDF keeps the same password as the original.

Which fonts and colours can I use?

Choose a standard PDF font (sans-serif, serif or monospace) or one of more than 50 free fonts made for your script – for example Lora, Montserrat or Caveat for Latin text, Sarabun or Kanit for Thai, Amiri for Arabic and Noto Serif JP for Japanese. Pick any colour and an opacity from 10 to 100%. A font file loads only when you use it, and the numbers are written as real, searchable text.

Can I write my own text, like “Page 1 of 9”?

Yes. Choose “Custom text…” and type it with {n} for the page number and {total} for the last number, for example Page {n} of {total} or – {n} –. Nine positions are available, and “Facing pages” mirrors left and right on even pages.
